STAGE 1: WILLOW CONTROL
The willow control recently completed along the Axedale River Reserve was coordinated by the North Central Catchment Management Authority with funding from the Victorian government. Willows are classified as a national Weed of Significance and were removed to enhance the natural habitat of the river environment. Contractors Platypus Environmental Services were engaged to cut out approximately 20 willow trees that were burnt off-site. The cut stumps were painted with herbicide to prevent regrowth. Follow up revegetation of native shrubs is planned for 2014.
The works form part of the broader $3.73M 'Caring for the Campaspe' project (2012-16) that aims to improve the health of the vegetation along the banks of the river on both private and public land. Incentives are currently available for river landholders for fencing, weed control and revegetation. The works complement the efforts of Axedale Project Platypus.
